Grade needed on your final
97.5%
The minimum score to hit your goal
Score 97.5% or higher on your final to finish the course with at least 90%.
How this final grade calculator works
This is the classic “what do I need on my final” calculator. You tell it where you stand and where you want to end up, and it works backward to the exact exam score that gets you there.
The key idea is that your current grade only fills the part of the course the final doesn't. If the final is worth 40%, your existing work scales up to cover the remaining 60% of your grade — and the final has to make up the rest.
We also flag the two outcomes students most want to know: when a target is out of reach (you'd need more than 100%) and when it's already locked in (you'd pass even with a zero).
How to find the grade you need
Three quick inputs from your syllabus and gradebook are all it takes.
Enter your current grade
Your overall percentage in the class right now, before the final.
Enter the grade you want
The overall course grade you're aiming for — an 80% for a B, 90% for an A, and so on.
Enter the final's weight
What percentage of your grade the final is worth. The required score appears instantly.
The formula behind it
w is the final's weight as a decimal (a 40% final is 0.40). Current × (1 − w) is how much your existing grade contributes once it scales to fill the non-final portion of the course.
Subtract that contribution from your goal to find what's left for the final to cover, then divide by w to convert it into a required exam score.
If the result is above 100%, the goal isn't reachable through the final alone. If it's zero or negative, you've already secured the grade.
Examples
Reaching for an A
Sitting at 85% with the final worth 40%, an A (90%) needs (90 − 85 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 97.5% on the final — tough but possible.
Just need to pass
At 68% with a 25% final, a 70% target needs (70 − 68 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 76% on the final.
Out of reach
At 74% with a 20% final, aiming for 90% needs (90 − 74 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 154% — impossible without extra credit, and the calculator says so.
Already locked in
At 96% with a 15% final, keeping an A (90%) only needs 56% on the final — you could have an off day and still finish with an A.
What the results mean
- A number between 0 and 100 is your target score — aim for that or higher.
- Above 100% means the grade can't be reached through the final alone; look into extra credit or talk to your professor.
- Zero or below means the grade is already guaranteed, even if you score nothing on the final.
- Convert the required percentage to a letter using the standard scale (90 = A, 80 = B, 70 = C).
